The 90's Butter Mom Outfit

The soft, lived-in look I keep reaching for, broken down piece by piece.

There is a certain kind of outfit I put on when I want to look pulled together but I have exactly zero energy to try. Soft oversized sweatshirt, high-waist jeans, gold hoops, sneakers, and a bag I can throw over one shoulder. It takes two minutes, it is completely comfortable, and I always feel like myself in it. I have started calling it my butter mom look, because that is exactly what it feels like: soft, warm, easy, a little bit 90s.

It is the look your favorite aunt had in old family photos. Slouchy but intentional. Comfortable without looking like you gave up. And the best part is that none of it is expensive or hard to find, which is why I keep coming back to it on the regular mom days, the school run days, the errand days, the days I am filming and still need to actually leave the house.

So here is the whole thing, head to toe, the way I actually build it. Everything here is in one Amazon list at the bottom if you want to shop the look.

The whole idea in one sentence: pick soft, roomy pieces in warm neutrals, keep the shapes relaxed on top and high on the waist, then let a little gold and a clean white sneaker do the "she tried" part for you.

The foundation (soft and oversized)

1. A buttery oversized sweatshirtThis is the hero of the whole look and the piece everything else is built around. You want it soft, roomy, and a little slouchy, in cream, oatmeal, butter yellow, or a washed neutral. Not a gym hoodie. Something you would be happy to be photographed in and equally happy to nap in.
2. An oversized crewneck, for the days you want it simplerSame energy, no hood. A relaxed crewneck sweatshirt tucked loosely into the front of your jeans is the most effortless version of this outfit and it photographs beautifully.
3. A soft oversized cardigan for cooler morningsWhen it is chilly, a chunky open cardigan over a plain tank does the exact same slouchy-soft job as the sweatshirt. This is the fall version of butter mom.
4. A ribbed tank underneathA fitted ribbed tank is the counterweight to all that volume. Roomy on top, fitted underneath, so you never disappear into the outfit. I keep these in a two pack because I wear them constantly.

The bottoms (high waist, always)

5. High-rise mom jeansThe non-negotiable. A true high-rise, slightly relaxed, straight or tapered mom jean is what makes the whole thing read 90s instead of just casual. The high waist is what lets you tuck the front of a big sweatshirt in and instantly look styled.
6. Wide-leg pants, for a softer dayWhen jeans feel like too much, a soft high-waist wide-leg pant gives you the same long line with none of the stiffness. Cream or tan keeps it in the butter family.
7. High-waist denim shorts for summerSame rules, warmer weather. A high-rise mid-length denim short under the oversized top is the July version of this whole outfit.

The shoes (clean and white)

8. Clean white sneakersNothing loud, nothing technical. A simple low-profile white leather sneaker keeps the outfit grounded and fresh. This is the one piece worth keeping actually clean, because it does a lot of the work.
9. New Balance 574 in white and greyThe dad-shoe-but-make-it-cute option. A little more 90s, a little more relaxed, and unfairly comfortable for how good they look with wide-leg pants.
10. Loafers, when you want it dressed up half a notchA soft leather loafer swaps in for the sneaker on the days you want the same easy outfit to look a touch more done. Great for brunch or a lunch out.

The bag (slouchy, over one shoulder)

11. A slouchy shoulder bagThe 90s shape: soft, unstructured, worn high under the arm. A buttery leather-look shoulder bag in tan or cream is the single accessory that makes this outfit look intentional instead of thrown on.
12. A crossbody sling for hands-free daysChasing kids, filming, both at once. A small crossbody keeps the vibe and frees up your hands. This is my real-life default more often than I would like to admit.
13. A leather tote for when you are carrying everythingSome days the bag has to hold a laptop, snacks, and half a diaper bag's worth of things. A soft structured tote in a warm neutral does that without breaking the look.

The gold (this is the "she tried" part)

14. Chunky gold hoopsIf you take one thing from this whole post, take the hoops. A medium chunky gold hoop against a soft neutral top is what turns comfortable into styled. They go with every single piece here.
15. A layered gold necklaceA dainty layered chain fills in the neckline when you are wearing the crewneck or the tank. Delicate on purpose, so it never competes with the hoops.
16. A simple gold watchA slim gold watch is the quiet finishing piece. It reads put-together on a wrist even when the rest of you is in a sweatshirt.

The little extras that make it feel 90s

17. 90s rectangle or oval sunglassesSmall, slim frames in tortoise or black. This is the fastest way to date the outfit to the right decade. Skip the oversized shield sunglasses here.
18. Claw clipsThe most 90s hair moment there is, and back for good reason. Twist it up, clip it, done. Perfectly on theme and genuinely useful.
19. Silk scrunchiesSoft on your hair, soft on the eyes, and a tiny nostalgic detail on your wrist when they are not in your hair.
20. A washed baseball capFor the truly no-effort days. A soft washed cap over the whole thing somehow makes it look even more intentional.
21. A slim leather belt with a gold buckleIf you tuck the sweatshirt in, a thin belt with a little gold hardware ties it to the hoops and the watch and makes the waist look deliberate.

How I actually put it together

On a normal day it is the oversized sweatshirt, mom jeans with the front loosely tucked, white sneakers, hoops, and the slouchy bag. That is the base. Ninety seconds and I am out the door looking like I thought about it.

To dress it up half a notch for brunch or a lunch, I swap the sneakers for loafers and add the layered necklace and the watch. To take it into summer, the jeans become high-waist denim shorts and the sweatshirt becomes the crewneck or a linen button-down left open over the tank. Same formula, different season. That is really the whole trick with butter mom: it is one soft, high-waisted, gold-accented idea that you can run all year.

And if you are building this from scratch, start with three things: one buttery oversized top, one true high-rise jean, and the gold hoops. Those three carry the entire look. Everything else on this list is just a variation on those, for different weather and different days.

This is my 90's Butter Summer. The soft, slow, mostly screen-free kind. While the kids are in the sprinkler and the playdough is out on the patio, this is what I am wearing. Frequently asked questions

What is the "butter mom" aesthetic?

It is a soft, easy, slightly 90s everyday look built on roomy warm-neutral pieces: a buttery oversized sweatshirt, high-waist mom jeans, chunky gold hoops, a slouchy shoulder bag, and clean white sneakers. The whole idea is comfortable and lived-in but still pulled together, in cream, oatmeal, tan and butter tones.

What shoes go with 90s mom jeans?

Clean white leather sneakers are the default and keep the look fresh. New Balance 574s in white and grey lean a little more 90s and go beautifully with wide-leg pants. For a dressier version, a soft leather loafer swaps right in.

How do I make an oversized sweatshirt look intentional instead of sloppy?

Three things. Wear it with a true high-rise jean so you can loosely tuck the front, which defines your waist. Add chunky gold hoops so it reads styled. And keep one crisp element, usually a clean white sneaker, so the whole outfit looks fresh rather than thrown on.

What accessories make an outfit look 90s?

Small rectangle or oval sunglasses, chunky gold hoops, a claw clip, silk scrunchies, and a slouchy shoulder bag worn high under the arm. Those five details do almost all the decade work on their own.

Can I wear the butter mom look in summer?

Yes. Swap the mom jeans for high-waist denim shorts and the sweatshirt for a relaxed crewneck, a ribbed tank, or a linen button-down left open. Keep the high waist, the white sneakers and the gold, and it works in the heat.
