The Back-to-School Routine Reset
A gentle two-week plan to ease everyone back in before the first bell.
Somewhere around the end of July, summer stops feeling endless and starts feeling like a countdown. The bedtimes have drifted late, the mornings are slow and glorious, and screen time has quietly become a way of life. And then the calendar reminds you: it is almost here.
- Orange County Public Schools: back Tuesday, August 11, 2026 (year ends May 26, 2027)
- Seminole County Public Schools: back a day earlier, Monday, August 10, 2026
- Private schools: most land in mid-to-late August, so check your school's calendar
- Florida Virtual School: FLVS Full Time first semester begins August 19, 2026, while FLVS Flex runs year-round so you can start courses on your own schedule
The trick I have learned after doing this a few times is not to flip a switch the night before school. A hard reset the day before the first day is a recipe for a meltdown, theirs and mine. What actually works is starting small about two weeks out and nudging everything back a little at a time, so by the first morning it already feels normal. Here is the plan I follow.
Two weeks out: start with sleep
One week out: rebuild the mornings
All two weeks: dial back the screens
The parts that make mornings actually run
Be gentle with yourself too
The routine reset is not just for the kids. Your summer rhythm drifted too, and the first week back is an adjustment for you as much as them. Ease your own bedtime and mornings back alongside theirs, get your coffee situation sorted, and give the first week some grace. It always feels bumpy for a few days and then, almost overnight, it clicks and everyone remembers how to do this.

When do Central Florida schools go back in 2026?
Orange County Public Schools return Tuesday, August 11, 2026, and Seminole County starts a day earlier on Monday, August 10, 2026. Most private schools go back in mid-to-late August, so check yours. For online families, FLVS Full Time first semester begins August 19, 2026, and FLVS Flex runs year-round so you can start courses anytime.
How early should I start adjusting bedtime before school?
About two weeks out. Move bedtime and wake-up 15 minutes earlier every two or three nights so the shift is gradual, rather than trying to change everything the night before the first day.
How do I make school mornings less chaotic?
Move decisions to the night before: lay out clothes, pack the backpack, set shoes and water bottle by the door, and use a simple morning checklist the kids can follow themselves. A launch-pad spot by the door helps a lot.
How do I cut back summer screen time before school?
Trim it gradually rather than all at once, and replace it with active or hands-on activities earlier in the day so screens are not the default. Small daily reductions are easier to stick to than a sudden ban.
