The big baby gear is what makes flying feel impossible, until you have the right system. Here's exactly how I handle the car seat and the sleep setup so we land ready, not frazzled.
The car seat
You have two solid options: bring it on board (if you bought your little one a seat, a car seat is the safest spot and often the best nap) or gate-check it. Either way, protect it. Gate-checked car seats get tossed, and damage can void the seat.
