You do not need paid software to make great content. When I started, I ran everything on free tools, and honestly many of them are still all you need. Here are the free tools I'd hand any new creator.

The small upgrades worth it

The one or two inexpensive gear upgrades that made the biggest difference (a mic, a tripod) are in my Amazon storefront.

Frequently asked questions

What free tools do content creators use?

Free phone video editors, Canva's free plan for design, a free scheduler, a link-in-bio page, auto-caption tools, and the built-in analytics on each platform.

Can you create content for free?

Yes. A phone, good natural light, a free editing app, and free design and scheduling tools are enough to start. Upgrade gear only when it pays off.

What is the first thing a new creator should buy?

If anything, a clip-on mic makes the biggest quality jump, since clear audio matters more than fancy video.

Heads up: some links in this post are affiliate links, including my Amazon storefront, which means I may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you.
