Hotel Tonight: How I Book Last-Minute Getaways for Way Less

A last-minute night away, booked in about three taps.

Every mom needs a "the bedtime routine is handled, I am clocking out" plan. Mine is a last-minute night away, and the app that makes it actually affordable is Hotel Tonight. Sometimes it is a full overnight by myself, sometimes it is the back half of a pool day that I just did not want to end. Either way, I almost never pay full price.

Here is exactly how it works, the little tricks that get you the best rate, and how I use it without blowing the budget.

What is Hotel Tonight?

Hotel Tonight (now owned by Airbnb) is an app that sells off hotel rooms that would otherwise go empty, often at a real discount. You can book a room for tonight, tomorrow, next week, or up to about 100 days in advance, and the whole thing takes roughly three taps and a swipe. Because it is filling unsold rooms, rates can run noticeably lower, up to around 27 percent less than the big booking sites.

It is the easiest way I have found to turn "I need a break" into a real night away by tonight.

The features that actually save you money

My tips for the best rate

My honest take: the rates really are good, but inventory is last-minute by design, so do not fall in love with one exact hotel. I keep two or three I would happily stay at and book whichever drops the best price that night.

How I actually use it as a mom

My favorite move is pairing it with a pool day. If I have done a ResortPass day pass and I am not ready to leave, I will check Hotel Tonight and see if I can just stay. It is also my go-to for a solo reset night, a low-key anniversary, or those travel days when you land late and need a room fast without overpaying.

And whatever I am throwing in the bag for a night away, my travel essentials are in my Amazon storefront.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hotel Tonight legit?

Yes. It is an established hotel-booking app, now owned by Airbnb, that specializes in unsold and last-minute rooms. You book in the app and check in at the hotel like normal.

Do I have to book same day?

No. You can book for tonight or up to about 100 days out. The deepest discounts tend to be same-day or day-before, but you have flexibility.

How much can I actually save?

Rates can run up to around 27 percent less than major booking sites, and the Daily Drop can take up to 30 percent off a specific hotel and date. Savings vary by city, date, and how last-minute you book.

What is the Daily Drop?

A once-a-day personalized deal of up to 30 percent off. Once you unlock it, you have 15 minutes to book before it expires, so open it only when you are ready to commit.

Can I use it for a staycation in my own city?

Absolutely, and I do. You do not have to travel far. A night at a nice hotel across town is one of my favorite cheap resets.
