Beat the Orlando Heat: Best Indoor Activities With Kids

Some Orlando afternoons, the heat (or the daily summer downpour) just wins, and that's when the indoor list saves us. Air conditioning, room to run, and zero sunburn. Here are the indoor spots I take my kids to escape the heat without losing our minds.

Hands-on learning (that doesn't feel like learning)

• Orlando Science Center: 65+ years of curiosity, with KidsTown for little learners, DinoDigs, and the Life exhibit. A whole rainy day right here.
• WonderWorks: the upside-down building on I-Drive, 35,000 square feet of interactive "edu-tainment" (space, natural disasters, a lab, and more).
• Crayola Experience: 70,000+ square feet of colorful, hands-on art activities. Toddler heaven.
• Museum of Illusions at ICON Park: 50+ mind-bending exhibits that are weirdly fun for all ages.

Run-off-the-energy play

• Monkey Joe's: inflatable obstacle courses, slides, and a playground for the under-12 crowd.
• Play Paradise: a bright indoor playground my son asks for by name, perfect for the under-6 crowd.
• Planet Play at Kennedy Space Center: a multi-story space-themed indoor play structure (slide down an astronaut, crawl through a black hole).
• Trampoline parks: Altitude (Sanford), RebounderZ (Apopka), and Planet Obstacle (Lake Mary, with a Ninja Warrior course and zip line).
• Dezerland Park: Orlando's largest indoor entertainment center, free admission with most attractions under $29 (auto museum, pinball, arcade).

Cool and calm

SEA LIFE Aquarium at ICON Park is a lovely lower-key option, Florida's only 360-degree ocean tunnel, thousands of sea creatures, and a two-story kids' play area. Perfect when everyone needs the volume turned down.

My move: hit an indoor spot in the brutal 1 to 4 pm window, then head out again in the evening when it cools off. It's the same rhythm I use at the parks, and it keeps everyone happy.

Pair it with a pool day
