Surviving a Long Flight With a Toddler
A long flight with a toddler is a special kind of marathon, but the right prep makes it survivable, even pleasant. Here is everything I pack and do to get through a flight with a little one.
Pack the carry-on right
- A new small toy or two they have never seen (novelty buys you time)
- Sticker books, busy boards, and a busy bag of little activities
- An audio player like a Tonies with headphones for screen-free calm
- More snacks than you think in easy, mess-free containers
- A full change of clothes for them and a spare top for you
Handle the hard parts
- For ear pressure, have them drink, nurse, or chew during takeoff and landing
- Walk the aisle when they get restless
- Protect the nap, dim, quiet, and their comfort item
- Lower your own expectations and take it one hour at a time

Frequently asked questions
How do you survive a long flight with a toddler?
Pack a carry-on of new small toys, busy activities, an audio player, and lots of snacks. Manage ear pressure with drinking, protect the nap, and take it one hour at a time.
How do I help my toddler's ears on a plane?
Have them drink, nurse, or chew during takeoff and landing. The swallowing helps their ears adjust to the pressure.
What toys are best for a flight with a toddler?
Novelty is key: a small new toy they haven't seen, sticker books, busy boards, and an audio player with headphones.
