What's Actually in My Makeup Bag

An everyday makeup bag with MAC essentials spilling out
The real, slightly messy contents of my everyday bag.

I did a full dump of my makeup bag the other day and honestly it was humbling. A little sandy from the pool, a crumb or two, but the actual products in there are the ones I trust enough to carry everywhere. No aspirational stuff, just what survives mom life.

If you have ever wondered what a real everyday makeup bag looks like when you are not doing a full glam, here is mine. These are the MAC pieces that make the cut and get used week after week.

The base essentials I always carry

MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation

This compact is the hardest worker in my bag. It touches up shine, evens out my skin midday, and covers a spot in seconds. Because it has a mirror built in, I can fix my face in a parking lot without any extra tools.

MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ Setting Spray

I keep the travel size of Fix+ in my bag to refresh my makeup when the Florida humidity flattens it. A couple of mists and my skin looks alive again instead of tired and powdery. It is my little reset button in a bottle.

The color I reach for on the go

MAC Velvet Teddy Lipstick

My travels-everywhere nude. I can swipe it on without a mirror and instantly look more put together, which is exactly what I need before I walk into anything. This is the most-used lipstick I own, no contest.

MAC Whirl Lip Pencil

Whirl lives right next to Velvet Teddy. I line before I apply so my lip color lasts through coffee, or I fill my whole lip with it plus a little balm for the easiest look ever. It is a tiny thing that does a lot.

MAC Powder Blush in Fleur Power

A tiny travel blush brush and my Fleur Power blush ride together in the bag. One quick swipe on the apples of my cheeks makes me look awake, which is the whole game when you are running on interrupted sleep.

The quiet workhorses

MAC Paint Pot in Painterly

Painterly is my one-swipe eye. When I have a second in the car, I run it across my lids to even them out and look more awake. It doubles as a base if I decide to actually do eyeshadow later, so it earns its spot.

MAC Spice Lip Pencil

Spice is my warmer liner for the days I want a softer, pinker nude. Having both Whirl and Spice in the bag means I can match whatever lip mood I am in without carrying my whole vanity around.

My tip: Build your bag around products that do more than one thing. A powder foundation with a mirror, a liner you can wear as full lip color, a setting spray that also preps. Fewer items, more uses, and your bag actually zips shut.

Frequently asked questions

What are the true essentials for an on-the-go bag?

For me it is a powder foundation with a mirror, a nude lip and its liner, a blush, and a setting spray. Those five things cover touch-ups and a full quick face, and they fit in a small pouch I can toss in any purse.

How often should I clean out my makeup bag?

I try to do a dump-and-wipe once a month, mostly to shake out the crumbs and toss anything expired. Makeup does not last forever, so if something smells off or has changed texture, I let it go even if it is barely used.

Do you carry full-size or travel-size products?

A mix. Lipsticks and compacts are already small enough to carry full size, but for setting spray I keep the travel size so it does not take over the whole bag. Travel sizes are great for testing a product before you commit too.
