My Hair Care Routine for Color-Treated Hair

Color costs money, so keeping it looking good is the whole game.

If you color your hair, you know the appointment is only half the battle. Keeping that color looking fresh and your ends from feeling like straw is the real work. As a busy mom I do not have time for a ten step hair routine, so I keep it simple with a few products that genuinely protect my color.

Here is the routine that keeps my color-treated hair soft, shiny, and holding its color as long as possible between salon visits.

The repair steps

Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector

This is my weekly treat before I wash. I work it through damp hair, let it sit while I do other things, then shampoo it out. It is a bond-building treatment and my hair genuinely feels stronger and less brittle when I stay consistent with it.

Olaplex No. 4 Shampoo

A gentle, color-friendly shampoo that cleans without stripping. It lathers nicely and leaves my hair feeling clean but never squeaky and dry. A great everyday base for color-treated hair.

Olaplex No. 5 Conditioner

The other half of the pair. It leaves my hair soft and detangles easily, which matters when I am rushing through a shower before the baby wakes up. My ends feel so much better with this in rotation.

Shine and protection

Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil

A few drops on damp or dry ends and my hair looks glossy and expensive. It also helps with heat protection when I do style with hot tools. A little goes a long way, so one bottle lasts.

Moroccanoil Treatment

My smoothing, shine-adding finisher. I run a small amount through my lengths to tame flyaways and add a healthy glow. It smells amazing and instantly makes my hair look more polished.

TRESemme Heat Protectant

If I am reaching for a hot tool, this goes on first, every time. Heat is hard on color-treated hair, so a heat protectant is a small step that saves my strands a lot of damage.

Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

An underrated hair hero. Sleeping on silk creates less friction, so I wake up with less frizz and my style holds better. It is gentle on color-treated hair and honestly just feels luxe for the price.

My tip: Wash color-treated hair a little less often and with cooler water to help color last. Dry shampoo on the in-between days is your friend. And do not skip heat protectant, ever.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash color-treated hair?

Less often tends to help color last. I stretch my washes with dry shampoo and use cooler water when I do wash, which keeps my color looking fresher for longer.

Do bond-building treatments really help?

For my color-treated hair, staying consistent with a weekly bond treatment makes my strands feel noticeably stronger and less brittle. Results can vary, but I am a believer.

Is a silk pillowcase worth it for hair?

I think so. Less friction means less frizz and better style retention for me, and it is gentle on both hair and skin. It is one of my favorite low-effort upgrades.
