My Summer Skincare and SPF Picks

Janet with fresh summer skin
Florida summer means SPF is basically a personality trait around here.

Summer in Florida is no joke. It is hot, it is humid, and the sun is relentless, so my skincare gets lighter and my SPF game gets serious. When it heats up I swap my heavier products for breathable ones and I reapply sunscreen like it is my job.

Here are the summer skincare and SPF picks I actually reach for from May through, well, forever, because it is basically summer here year round.

Sun protection first

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46

My daily face SPF, all year but especially in summer. It is lightweight, does not sting my eyes when I sweat, and works under makeup. General guidance is to reapply about every two hours when you are out in the sun, and I do.

Mario Badescu Facial Spray

My summer survival mist. When I am overheated at the splash pad, a spritz of this instantly cools me down and refreshes my makeup. I keep one in my bag and one in the car, no shame.

Lightweight hydration

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid

In summer I want hydration without heaviness, and this is perfect. A few drops on damp skin gives me moisture that does not feel like a blanket. It layers great under a lighter moisturizer.

e.l.f. Holy Hydration Face Cream

My warm-weather moisturizer swap. It is lighter than my thick winter creams but still keeps my skin comfortable, and it sinks in fast so I am not shiny before I even leave the house.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser

After a sweaty, sunscreen-heavy day I want a cleanser that actually cleans but does not strip. This one handles summer grime without leaving my skin tight, which is exactly what I want at the end of a long hot day.

Thayers Witch Hazel Toner

A few swipes after cleansing feels amazing when it is hot out. It is refreshing and helps my skin feel clean without any tightness. A small summer treat that costs almost nothing.

My tip: A hat and shade beat any sunscreen, so use SPF alongside them, not instead. Keep a mini sunscreen in your bag for reapplying, and remember your ears, the back of your neck, and the tops of your feet. Those always get me.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I reapply sunscreen in summer?

General guidance is about every two hours outdoors, and sooner if you have been swimming or sweating a lot. I keep a mini SPF in my bag so it is always easy.

Should I change my skincare for summer?

I lighten mine up, swapping heavy creams for a breathable moisturizer and leaning on hydrating serums. Your skin may want less in the heat and humidity.

Does a facial mist actually do anything?

It will not replace moisturizer, but a mist is a lovely way to cool off and refresh in the heat. I mostly love mine for comfort on brutally hot days.
