Every August, right as the back-to-school countdown kicks in, Universal Orlando flips a switch and the whole park turns into the biggest, best haunted event in the country. Halloween Horror Nights is the one night out I look forward to all year, and this year it is starting earlier than it ever has.

The 2026 dates: Halloween Horror Nights 35 runs on 48 select nights from August 28 through November 1, 2026 at Universal Studios Florida. That August 28 opening is the earliest start in the event's 35-year history, so it overlaps the very beginning of the school year here. There is also a Premium Scream Night on August 27 and October 19 for early access and shorter lines.

First, the honest part: this is not a kids' event. Halloween Horror Nights is intense, genuinely scary, and geared toward adults and older teens. There are graphic scares, fog, strobe lights, and characters who will absolutely chase you. Why it makes the perfect parents' night out

Here is my case for it as a mom: it is a real night out that feels like an event, not just dinner. You get dressed, you leave the house, you scream your head off with your person or your girlfriends, and you come home genuinely buzzing. After a summer of sprinklers and snack duty, a night of adrenaline and no one asking you for anything is exactly the reset you need before routines come back.

What to know before you go

Go on a weeknight if you canSunday through Thursday nights are dramatically less crowded than Fridays and Saturdays. Same houses, same scares, a fraction of the wait. If you only get one night, make it a weeknight.

Buy your tickets aheadSingle-night tickets, multi-night passes, and add-ons all sell out or jump in price closer to popular dates. Buy early, and decide then whether the upgrade is worth it for you.

Consider Express if you hate linesThe HHN Express pass lets you skip the regular line at each house once. On a busy night it is the difference between five houses and ten. On a quiet weeknight you may not need it. Judge by the date.

Do the houses first, scare zones laterHead straight to the haunted houses when the event opens while lines are shortest, and save the outdoor scare zones and shows for later in the night when house lines get long.

What to wear (learn from my mistakes)

You will walk miles and stand in lines for hours, so this is a sneakers night, not a cute-boots night. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes you have already broken in, and dress for Florida: it is still hot and humid in late August and September, so light layers you can peel off beat anything heavy. Bring a small crossbody for your phone, ticket, and a portable charger, because your phone is your ticket and your map all night.

How to make a whole date night of it

The event does not open until the evening, so the afternoon is yours. My favorite version: an early dinner at CityWalk or nearby, then walk over as the sun goes down and the event opens. If you are making it an overnight, a Universal-area hotel means you can stumble back to bed at 2am instead of driving home. Either way, book the sitter for a little later than you think, because you will not want to rush out at midnight.
