How to Pack for a Family Trip
Packing for a whole family used to wreck me until I built a system. Now it's calm and repeatable. Here is exactly how I pack for a family trip so nothing gets forgotten and the bags stay organized.
Use packing cubes, one person per color
- Assign each family member a color, grab-and-go by person
- Roll clothes to fit more and reduce wrinkles
- Pack full outfits together for the kids so mornings are fast
The carry-on strategy
- A full change of clothes for each kid (and a spare top for you)
- All medications, chargers, and comfort items in the carry-on
- Snacks, water, and entertainment within reach
Pack less, stress less
- Bring laundry pods and re-wear, you do not need an outfit per hour
- A wet/dry bag for messes and swimsuits
- A shared toiletry kit instead of duplicates

Frequently asked questions
How do you pack for a family trip with kids?
Use packing cubes with one color per person, roll clothes, pack full outfits for the kids, and keep changes of clothes, meds, chargers, and comfort items in the carry-on.
Are packing cubes worth it for families?
Yes, they keep each person's things separate and easy to grab, help you fit more, and make living out of a suitcase far less chaotic.
How do you pack lighter for a trip?
Bring laundry pods and re-wear, share toiletries instead of duplicating, and plan outfits by day rather than overpacking just in case.
