My MAC Makeup Must-Haves

Janet's MAC makeup essentials laid out on a vanity
The MAC pieces that live in my bag year after year.

I am not a hundred-product kind of girl. I have two little ones, one is five and one is still a baby, and my getting-ready window is basically however long the baby stays happy in the bouncer. So the makeup I keep has to earn its spot.

MAC is the brand I keep coming back to. It is not the cheapest thing on my shelf, but the pieces I own have lasted me forever and they photograph beautifully. Here are the MAC must-haves I actually use, honestly, from a real mom who does her face in the car more often than she wants to admit.

The lip pieces I never skip

MAC Velvet Teddy Lipstick

This is the one everybody talks about, and honestly it earns it. It is a soft muted nude that reads like my lips but a little more put together. The matte finish is comfortable, not chalky, and it makes me look awake even on three hours of sleep.

MAC Whirl Lip Pencil

Whirl is the liner I pair with almost every neutral lip. It is a dusty rose-brown that keeps my lipstick from wandering and gives that nineties define-the-edges look I love. I sometimes fill in my whole lip with it and swipe balm on top for an easy day.

MAC Spice Lip Pencil

Spice is a warmer, pinker brown than Whirl and it flatters so many skin tones. When I want my nude lip to look a touch fresher and less matte-brown, this is the liner I reach for. It layers under Velvet Teddy really nicely too.

MAC Marrakesh Lipstick

Marrakesh is my slightly deeper option for date nights or when I actually put on jeans instead of leggings. It is a warm terracotta nude with a satin feel, so it is easy to wear but still looks like I tried. A little more grown-up than my everyday Velvet Teddy.

My base and setting essentials

MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation

This is my go-to for the days I want real coverage, like when we are shooting content or heading somewhere I will be in photos. It is a matte, buildable formula that holds up in Florida heat better than most things I have tried. A little goes a long way, so one bottle lasts me.

MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation

On lazy mornings I skip liquid entirely and just press this powder on with a sponge. It evens everything out and knocks down shine, and I keep it in my bag for midday touch-ups when the humidity gets to me. It is the most-used compact I own.

MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ Setting Spray

Fix+ does double duty for me. A few mists at the end locks my makeup in, and I also spritz it over powder to melt everything together so I do not look cakey. On no-makeup days I just spray it for a little dewy freshness. Genuinely one of my favorite MAC products.

My tip: If a MAC lipstick ever feels drying on you, prep with a little balm, let it sink in for a minute, then line with the pencil first. The color grabs better and wears way more comfortably through the day.

Frequently asked questions

Is MAC makeup worth the price for a busy mom?

For me, yes, because these pieces last. My Studio Fix products and lip pencils stretch for a long time since you use so little, so the cost per use ends up being reasonable. I would rather own a few things I truly reach for than a drawer full of stuff I never touch.

What MAC lipstick should I start with?

If you want one that works for almost everyone, start with Velvet Teddy. It is the soft nude that reads like a nicer version of your own lips. Pair it with Whirl or Spice liner and you have a complete everyday look.

Does Studio Fix hold up in humidity?

In my experience it holds up better than a lot of foundations I have tried down here in Florida, especially when I set it with the powder and a mist of Fix+. No makeup is fully sweat-proof, but this combo gets me through a full day of errands and toddler chaos.
