What to Wear and Bring to Halloween Horror Nights
I went to Halloween Horror Nights on September 3 and got through eight of the ten houses. If you're getting ready for your own night, start with an outfit you can comfortably walk around in and a bag you won't mind carrying.
You can still make it cute and be comfortable for the night.
Check the costume rules before planning a full look
A horror movie tee, a favorite band shirt, or Halloween colors are an easy place to start. Planning a costume? Read Universal Orlando's current clothing and costume policy for your event, and confirm any specific outfit questions with Guest Services before you go.
Universal prohibits costume masks, veils, and long trains. Face coverings for medical or health reasons are allowed. Check the separate Premium Scream Night rules if that is your ticket.
Start with the shoes
Pick a pair you already know you can walk in. A shoe that feels fine for a quick errand might feel very different after a long park night.
- Wear them first. Take a longer walk in the shoes and socks you plan to bring.
- Try comfortable closed-toe sneakers. They're a practical starting point for this kind of night.
- Check your socks. Choose a pair that stays put without rubbing.
- Think about rain. Skip anything you'd worry about getting wet or dirty.
Dress for your forecast
Check the weather close to your visit. Choose comfortable clothes you can move in, then add a light layer if the forecast calls for it or you tend to get cold.
A compact poncho is easy to tuck away. Try fitting it in your bag at home so you're not carrying it in your hand all night.
Bag strategy
A small crossbody or belt bag can keep the basics within reach. A backpack is also an option: Universal's official packing guide says a regularly sized bag or backpack can go through the haunted houses.
Choose what sits comfortably on you and pack only what you'll use. Check the current entry policy and follow any separate storage instructions on rides.
What goes in the bag
- Your ticket and phone. Have your admission ready before you reach the entrance.
- A portable charger and cable. Charge the battery pack before you leave, and double-check that the cable fits your phone.
- A small reusable water bottle. Universal's packing guide says to arrive with it empty.
- A compact poncho. A little rain plan takes very little space.
- Lip balm, a hair tie, and blister bandages. Add the small comfort items that make sense for you.
- Earplugs, if you want them. Universal includes them as an optional item in its packing guide.
For the full permitted and prohibited item list, check Universal Orlando's entry rules before packing. The list above is a starting point for an ordinary park bag.
What to leave at home
A few items are specifically off the packing list under Universal's entry rules:
- Wallet chains, flashlights, laser pointers, fish hooks, and clothing with sharp metal spikes. These are prohibited at HHN.
- Glass containers, bags with wheels, and weapons or weapon-like objects. Universal prohibits these at entry.
For a lighter, simpler night, also consider leaving these at home:
- Irreplaceable accessories. Keep it simple if you'd spend the night worrying about losing something.
- Jewelry that catches or swings. Try your outfit with the bag on so you can spot anything awkward.
- Extras you won't use. Empty the bag first instead of taking everything that's already in it.
Makeup and hair, realistically
Keep it as simple as you want. If you prefer your hair off your face, tuck in an extra hair tie. Choose makeup you've already worn comfortably, so the evening doesn't become one long touch-up.
