New Year's Eve at Disney World and Orlando: What to Expect and How to Plan

New Year's Eve at Disney is magical and completely overwhelming, both at once. It's one of the biggest crowd days of the whole year. If you know what you're walking into and plan for it, it's unforgettable. Here's the honest local rundown.

What to expect

Special fireworks, Magic Kingdom and EPCOT typically put on extended New Year's Eve firework shows, and it's spectacular.
Peak crowds. This is one of the busiest days of the year. Parks can reach capacity and stop admitting guests, so having a park reservation and getting there early is everything.
A party atmosphere with music and DJ dance parties in the parks and at Disney Springs.

The golden rule: arrive at rope drop (or earlier). On New Year's Eve, showing up mid-afternoon can mean not getting in at all. Early in, and pick your fireworks spot hours ahead.

Doing it with little kids? Consider the alternatives

Midnight is a lot for small children in a massive crowd. A few gentler ways to celebrate:

Do an early "kids' countdown" and watch the regular nighttime fireworks, then leave before the crush.
Disney Springs has a festive, free atmosphere with less intensity than the parks.
Watch from your resort. Many hotels have views of the park fireworks, celebrate in pajamas, no crowds.
Ring in the new year on Orlando time with a resort pool day and an early night.

What to bring
